General History of the Burrough Family in Bowerchalke and Broad Chalke

The earliest definite ancestor found for the Broad Chalke branch of the Burrough family is William Burrough who was born in 1723 and lived in Bowerchalke. Burrough is a common surname in Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset.

The Burrough family were small farmers, basketmakers, builders and carpenters and Thomas (1) moved to Broad Chalke about 1799. They have owned or rented numerous houses and plots of land at the north east part of Broad Chalke and John Burrough, born in 1812, is known to have built two cottages near Sun Cottage.

Several marriages are recorded with members of other local families such as Golding, Gould, Morris, Witt and Arnold.

Three of four brothers in the 1800s were non-conformists and are buried in the United Reformed Church graveyard.

Abner, born in 1823, emigrated to New South Wales with his wife Elizabeth and they returned later.

Hedley, born in 1876, trained as a solicitor and worked as a manager for the YMCA in Brighton and Newport Mon. He returned to Broad Chalke for his retirement and kept pigs, chickens, ducks and geese at Barn Orchard.

Hedley's daughter Eve also retired to Broad Chalke and the family has retained properties to the present day.

Burroughs

The name Burroughs was brought to England in the great wave of migration following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Burroughs family lived in Hampshire. The name was given to settlements located near a hill, and is from the Old English beorg, which means hill. It is from one of many English settlements so named that this family take their name.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Burrough, Burgh, Borrows, Burrowes, Burroughs, Burrows, Burroughes and many more. First found in Hampshire where they were descended from Hubert de Burgh, who became Lord of the Manor of Tichfield in that county.

If it is John (1), he was the eldest son of William, and Thomas (1), born in 1771. However, It could be the son John (2) of Richard Burrow. Richard married in 1758 so his son John (2) could be about age 50 at this date. Betsey was aged 62 (born 1779) in the 1841 Bowerchalke Census

Document for purchase of land mentions Thomas (2) of North Street, presumably in Sun Cottage which he had inherited from Thomas (1), as sole purchasor of land "for the lives of Samuel Parrot and William West" but only for the term of his life for 6/8d per annum. Possibly Barn Orchard

Probate of Will of John Burrough mentions brother Thomas whose sons were Thomas, William and Abner. He is mentioned before Thomas in the Will of Joan Burrough so he is assumed to be older than Thomas. If this was John (1) who was adult in 1797 (covenant 1797), he was born in 1771 (source: Bowerchalke Census 1841) and he would be 81 years old at this date. His brother Thomas (1) had sons Thomas (2), William (2) and Abner. Another son of Thomas (1), John (3), was still alive but not mentioned - why not? If this is the Will of John (3) who would have been 40 years old, then his brother Thomas (2) did not have sons Thomas, William and Abner. John (2) did not have a brother Thomas. It is most likely the Will of John (1) who presumably had no children

Maria (1) née Morris died and was buried in the grave of Thomas (1) and Nanny because Thomas (2) had not yet died although Maria could not have been a wife of Thomas (1). Maria's name is carved on the back of the headstone. She was aged 58 (Source: Church burial records) although if she was born in 1803 (1851 Census) she would have been about 56; she was about 33 to 35 years old when she married Thomas (2) in 1846 and she died before Thomas (2)'s children were born. Thomas (2) later married Maria née Thick who was 30 years younger than him and they had six children.

Abner, Elizabeth and daughter Maria Louisa returned to Broad Chalke on 27/06/1860. Two other children died young in Australia and another was born and died after their return.

Julia Ellen Burrough born, daughter of Thomas (2) and Maria (2); married Alfred Hammond. Handley Hammond has information that Julia was "walking out" with Alfred but Maria (2) (C of E) did not approve of marriage to Alfred (a Plymouth Brother and member of the United Reformed Church). Religion or his perceived inadequate job in an outfitter's shop may have been the reason. She became a court dressmaker in Brighton, married someone else there but her husband died so she returned to Broad Chalke and married Alfred, probably still with the disapproval of her mother Maria (2).
It seems that Thomas (2) married second wife Maria née Thick, had six children by her, Julia Ellen (born 1863), Adelaide Maria (born 1864, died in infancy), Nellie (born 1865) and Thomas Gravett (born about 1868, died in infancy), Mina Kate and Hedley Gravett.
There are three Burrough graves in All Saints' Churchyard; one with Thomas (1), Nanny and Maria (1); one with Adelaide Maria aged 2 years and 8 months and Thomas Gravett aged 23 months; and another with Thomas (2), Maria (2) and Mina Kate with her infant son.

Will of Thomas Burrough (2) mentions two brothers John (3) and William (2), but the third brother Abner is not mentioned although still alive - why not? He had returned from New South Wales. Thomas (2) had not died at this date; he died on 9/4/1880.

Thomas (2) died. His gravestone is in the All Saints Church graveyard. The gravestone shows his wife Maria's name carved before Mina Kate even though Maria (2) died 22 years later than Mina. Possibly the gravestone, which is in excellent condition, is not Thomas's original in 1880 but dates from 1924 when Maria (2) died. The Will, dated 8/12/1870, proved 18/9/1883, mentions land rented from King's College, Cambridge, and says that he lived in North Street, Broad Chalke although another document suggests that he was living in Barn Orchard in 1851

About this time it is believed he also swapped a field called Goose Green (beyond the field opposite the entrance to Chalk Pyt House, on the hill beyond the hedge) for a 3 acre field adjacent to Barn Orchard, opposite Meadow House (Mead House) so £40 is probably not the real value of Tank Cottage but a balancing sum

This branch of the Burrough family continues to own property at Broad Chalke. There is another person called Burrough in Damerham but he is not sure if he is related. Other persons called Burrough have lived in the Fovant area. There was also a John Burrough in Bowerchalke until recently but although contact with him was attempted he never replied and has probably died
